Ai GDC Awards, assegnati al GDC 2011, la fanno da padrone Red Dead Redemption (4 premi), il contagioso Minecraft (ben 5 premi) e il survival horror Amnesia: The Dark Descent (3 premi). Curioso notare come questi ultimi due siano giochi indipendenti sviluppati con un budget ridotto (ridottissimo, nel caso di Minecraft).
Red Dead Redemption vince naturalmente la palma di miglior gioco, aggiungendo miglior design, migliore tecnologia e miglior audio. Il fenomeno Minecraft si distingue, fra le altre cose, per innovazione e miglior debutto. Amnesia: The Dark Descent domina invece la categoria indie per tecnica audio e grafica. Premio “pioniere” per il leggendario game designer Yu Suzuki (ShenMue e tanti altri capolavori Sega).
